Manaiakalani Film Festival

WALT - write a recount

It was the 10th annual Manaikalani Film Festival of 2017. This remarkable event took place in Sylvia Park Hoyts Cinemas on Wednesday the 8th of November. A great amount of students from different schools in the Manaiakalani cluster have also watched the movies in the Hoyts Cinemas.

As we were seated in our seats we were excited and comfortable at the same time. We watched other movies from diverse schools and they were interesting and also not really the kind of movies I usually watched. The movies from Pt England School were the funniest. Some movies from Pt England that we watched were Slo Mo, Taste Test, Ask Your Aunty and other more cool movies.
After a long period of time watching these fantastic movies. We then went back out of the cinemas waiting for our buses to return back to school. I really enjoyed watching these fabulous movies created by students from each and different one of the Manaiakalani schools. You can click on the link to watch different movies from other school.

Mr Patterson Motivational Talk

Today Mr Patterson came and talk to the Yr 7/8's about their future and other awesome stuff. One thing I picked up from his talk was when he was talking about Being a Giver not a Taker. Meaning not to be selfish and to be positive and have strength. Together we watched a short video about a 11 year old boy named Uili who has given his lunch money to a homeless man everyday for two weeks. The old man was crying and sitting out side the Leabank shops. A few days later Uili didn't know that he was going to take a trip to Wellington. He also talks about A+I+M. A stands for Aspiration, I stands for Inspiration and M stands for Motivational.

Explanation Writing

WALT - Practice explanation writing

Why is regular exercise important?

I will be explaining to you three main points to why regular exercise is important. How you can live longer, keeps you in a good mood and also keeps you healthy

First point for this explanation is about you and me living longer for the rest of our lives. Regular exercise helps us to live longer by being fit and always eating healthy food. Eating fruits and veggies will help you increase the level of having heart disease.

Secondly exercise also keeps you in a good mood for the day. By walking in the morning for 30 mins each day, stretching, running and other exercises. When you have finished doing all of that you will feel more happier and more excited for the day that is coming ahead.

Finally my last main point of regular exercise is to keep your body in a healthy weight. Meaning to eat healthy and it helps you lower the risk of some diseases including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

I believe these three main points will help you live longer, keeping you in a good mood and keeping you healthy are reasons why regular exercise is important. I hope you take this information and use this to keep you body strong.

Today I have finished off my practice explanation writing. This is to help with my test next week. The topic for this explanation writing is Why is regular exercise important? I have written three elements explaining each idea i have brainstormed. Hope you get information from this explanation writing.

Term 4 Immersion Assembly

Hello people, the is the start of a new term which is Term 4. The topic for this term is called Musical Madness!!!. Teachers from different teams have created their own skit or item during the school holidays to present to the students of Pt England for the last term of 2017. Each team did a very good job entertaining us with their awesome skits and singing.

To start off this term we had an eye-opening performance by the remarkable senior management team and one astonishing teacher who are followed by Mr Burt, Mrs Nua, Mr Somerville, Mr Jacobson and Mr Wiseman (astonishing teacher). They were singing their new song Musical Madness Saves the Day. Each teacher had an instrument to play. Mr
Burt was playing the guitar, Mrs Nua had her tambourine, Mr Somerville was rocking out his drums, Mr Jacobson playing with his trumpet and Mr Wiseman playing the bass. Together they made a wonderful band.

Team 1 teachers did a item when they were playing cards and listening to music. There focus for this term is listening to music and how it affects their emotions. Team 2 did an amazing performance of Miss Gaston singing "The Lion sleeps tonight". As she was singing other teachers came in with different instruments. Miss Peck was playing the castanet, Miss Tumahai was playing the xylophone and last was Miss Nalder playing the bongos.

Teachers from Team 3 made a movie about songs in real life. They were also lip syncing to different types of songs as they were talking to each other. The teachers involved Mr Moran, Miss King, Miss Eadie and Miss Davis. They were singing different songs. Team 4 teachers made a little movie kind of like carpool karaoke but they were singing different songs in a car. Each of them had a turn driving while they were singing their hearts out!! The teachers are followed by Mr Somerville, Mr Goodwin, Miss Scanlan, Miss Parent, Miss West and Miss Buchanan.

Last but not least was the wonderful Team 5 teachers who performed an excellent item. The group of teachers are Mr Wiseman, Mrs Ilaoa, Mrs Tele'a, Ms Tapuke and Whaea Kelly. They were acting as if they were a family and they also watched the movie Lion King for their family movie night. There was different music in the audio and whenever it changes their emotions change too. It was really funny and amazing.

My favourite was Team 4 and 3 and 5. They had wonderful movies and made me laugh the whole time. It is pretty sad for me because it is the last Immersion assembly before I go to college.

Mount Rushmore

Today I have read a text on Read Theory about Mount Rushmore. This text is about faces of four presidents, George Washington (1st US president), Thomas Jefferson (3rd US president), Theodore Roosevelt (26th US president) and last Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th president of USA. The four presidents are carved in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

A South Dakota historian named Doane Robinson had wanted to carve western heroes on the mountain. But instead of carving western heroes a designer named Gutzon Borglum decided to make it more nationally by carving the faces of the four presidents. It took fourteen years to carve it. Finally on the 1st of October 1941 it was ready to be opened for the public to see.

Tapawha Learning with the teacher

Today my group and I (Tapawha) were meeting our teacher for our gloss test results. We were to look at our test results and see if we have improved. My results were fine but I still needed to improve and practice on my division, fraction and all kinds of maths work.

After looking through our results for our gloss test. My maths teacher (Mrs Tele'a) and my group were just going through some problems we were stuck on. So we started off by working our some fractions. Like how to write 1/2 or 1/10, putting the number in order. Smallest to largest. we also made equations like 1/2 of 40 = ? We started of by thinking of a division, 40 divided by 2 which equals 20. So 1/2 of 40 = 20. We moved in decimals and did the same thing. Like what is 1/2 in decimal from. The answer 0.5.

Winter Learning Journey #Day 3 Wild Eyes

Activity 1: Day 3

The animal that I am going to adopt is a native animal which called a tuatara. A tuatara is a living reptile which is the longest most living reptile. It is also older than dinosaurs! It has survived for approximately 200 million years. Did you know that young tuataras have a third eye. The third eye is on top of their brains between their other eyes.

What do they eat:
Tuataras are carnivores, which means they eat meat. Such as huhu grubs, weta, baby mice and other sorts of insects.

They were many tuataras found all over New Zealand. But now they live in 32 offshore islands. If a predator eats the tail of a tuatara it can regenerate again. Which means it will grow its tail back again.

Activity 2:

Here are my 3 reasons why all possums should be killed in New Zealand.Screenshot 2017-07-12 at 12.35.29 PM.png

The main thing about all predators is that they affect us. Poor farmers have to pay millions of dollars because of damage made by possums! Lot’s of people in New Zealand are starting to trap possums but I think that it’s just sad. Instead of killing our predators they should go back to where they came from instead of killing them. Also other predators like stoats and rats are harmful too. Like stoats carry out dead baby ducks which is really sad. Also it destroys our environment with predators running over our plants and spilling rubbish!

PS: I got lot’s of help from my sister actually she helped me with the whole thing!

Winter Learning Journey Day 2

Activity 1:
After traveling everywhere in Auckland I have been instructed to read articles about Rangitoto Island, Karekare beach and the Kauri tree (Tane Mahuta).
Out off all three of them. I have chosen the best one I have enjoyed exploring which is Tane Mahuta. Why? It is a well known tree and also the most living tree in New Zealand. He is the son of Ranginui (sky father) and Papatuanuku (earth mother). He has separated both of his parents from living in the darkness, once he pushed them apart he laid to rest turning himself into a Kauri. All the other plants and that is all his children surrounding him.
Image result for tane mahuta

Activity 2:
Here I am imagining that I am interviewing Laura on her fabulous adventures she had.
Here is 5 questions I’ve asked her.

Who taught you how to sail around the world?
Has your parents sailed before?
Are you the only child who is sailing around the world out of your family?
How does it feel like being the youngest sailor in the world?
Any advice for kids who want to solo sail like you?

Bonus Activity:
After interviewing Laura Dekker on some questions. I have been instructed to interview one of my family members of what they like to do in outdoors.

Interview to my sister:
  • Jump on the trampoline
  • Play with my cousins outside
  • Going to the swimming pools
  • Walks in the Panmure basin
  • Playing with her friends outside at the basketball court

This is what my sister likes to do when she is outdoors.
