Activity 1: Day 3

The animal that I am going to adopt is a native animal which called a tuatara. A tuatara is a living reptile which is the longest most living reptile. It is also older than dinosaurs! It has survived for approximately 200 million years. Did you know that young tuataras have a third eye. The third eye is on top of their brains between their other eyes.  

What do they eat:

Tuataras are carnivores, which means they eat meat. Such as huhu grubs, weta, baby mice and other sorts of insects.

They were many tuataras found all over New Zealand. But now they live in 32 offshore islands. If a predator eats the tail of a tuatara it can regenerate again. Which means it will grow its tail back again.

Activity 2:

Here are my 3 reasons why all possums should be killed in New Zealand.

The main thing about all predators is that they affect us. Poor farmers have to pay millions of dollars because of damage made by possums! Lot’s of people in New Zealand are starting to trap possums but I think that it’s just sad. Instead of killing our predators they should go back to where they came from instead of killing them. Also other predators like stoats and rats are harmful too. Like stoats carry out dead baby ducks which is really sad. Also it destroys our environment with predators running over our plants and spilling rubbish!

PS: I got lot’s of help from my sister actually she helped me with the whole thing!

Winter Learning Journey Day 2

Activity 1:

After traveling everywhere in Auckland I have been instructed to read articles about Rangitoto Island, Karekare beach and the Kauri tree (Tane Mahuta).

Out off all three of them. I have chosen the best one I have enjoyed exploring which is Tane Mahuta. Why? It is a well known tree and also the most living tree in New Zealand. He is the son of Ranginui (sky father) and Papatuanuku (earth mother). He has separated both of his parents from living in the darkness, once he pushed them apart he laid to rest turning himself into a Kauri. All the other plants and that is all his children surrounding him.

Activity 2:

Here I am imagining that I am interviewing Laura on her fabulous adventures she had.

Here is 5 questions I’ve asked her.

Who taught you how to sail around the world?

Has your parents sailed before?

Are you the only child who is sailing around the world out of your family?

How does it feel like being the youngest sailor in the world?

Any advice for kids who want to solo sail like you?

Bonus Activity:

After interviewing Laura Dekker on some questions. I have been instructed to interview one of my family members of what they like to do in outdoors.

Interview to my sister:

• Jump on the trampoline
• Play with my cousins outside
• Going to the swimming pools
• Walks in the Panmure basin
• Playing with her friends outside at the basketball court

Winter Learning Journey - Day 1

Day 1: 100% PURE New Zealand  

                                

Well, the time has now come! School’s out for the holidays and your tour of New Zealand is about to begin. I hope that you are ready and excited! Curious Kiwi certainly is – he can’t wait to start the Great Kiwi Road Trip! Before you all hit the road, let’s take a minute to review some key facts about New Zealand.

Activity 1:  Go to the Tourism New Zealand website and click on the ‘Facts - New Zealand People’ tab. Read about the people of New Zealand and then choose three interesting facts to post on your blog. The facts must be written in your own words. Do not simply copy and paste the facts from the website☺.

Activity 2: Your tour of New Zealand is going to start right here in Auckland. Watch the Tourist video for Auckland to learn about the awesome things that you can see and do in the city. Once you’ve finished, choose your favourite five activities from the video and list them on your blog.  

Bonus Activity: Now it’s time to start your tour! Curious Kiwi decides to start by taking you on a short tour through downtown Auckland. You stop at the Sky Tower, the tallest building in all of New Zealand. When you look up, you see a huge New Zealand flag on the top of the tower. This flag was created back in 1902. That makes the New Zealand flag 115 years old!

Last year, the Prime Minister of New Zealand suggested that we should replace the flag with a new, updated design. He invited everyone in New Zealand to come up with their own flag design and submit it.

For this activity, it is your turn to design a new flag. Use any drawing programme that you wish. I would recommend the Flag Designer website. It allows you to create a flag in three easy steps. When you are done, take a screenshot of your flag and post it on your blog. Here is an example:

Activity 1

Fact 1 - There are approximately 69% of European descent in New Zealand, approximately 14.6% people who are indigenous Maori in New Zealand, 9.2% of Asian and 6.9% non Maori Pacific islanders.

Fact 2 - 15% families in New Zealand own their own boat.

Fact 3 - In New Zealand, Rugby football are the most popular onlooker sport.

Activity 2

My 1st favourite activity was going to Rainbows End

2nd was the skytower in the city

3rd was going to the Auckland where children discovers different kinds of animals

4th was the museum in the Auckland Domain  Park

My last one was the beach in Mission Bay where is known as an inner city

Bonus Activity:

This is my finished bonus activity. The background of the flag (black & blue) represents the starry night sky in New Zealand and the blue sea. The red cross represents the national red cross and the green crown represents the green ferns in the forest.
