Summer Learning Journey Bonus Activity

Bonus Activity
It’s time to use your imagination to write a short story. I’ve provided you with three different beginnings for a story. Choose your favourite beginning and finish the story. What happens next? You can use your imagination and create any ending that you want. To earn full points, you must post, at least 8-10 sentences, on your blog.

  1. I looked around the room. Nothing seemed unusual, but then…

  1. I knew it was going to be an unusual day when my mom came into my bedroom and said...

  1. The spaceship was out of control and only one person could save us....
Bonus Activity = 10 points

I knew it was going to be an unusual day when my mum came into my bedroom and said. "Honey, I have some heartbroken news to tell you." "When your dad was out with your grandma to go shopping. He told her to wait in the car while he goes and get some groceries. Until suddenly she saw an orange juice bottle and drank it. She started to cough, cough, cough and cough again until she felt like she was going to have a heart attack. When dad came back from his groceries shopping he saw grandma lying down and knew that she was gone peacefully". "Your dad started to cry and he called me to tell you". Riley, a 13 year old went out of her bedroom and cried coming down the stairs down to the living. Then her mum came following her down the stairs and also cried. Later the days have been past and Riley and her family misses their lovely Grandma.

Summer Learning Journey Day 5 A2

Activity 2
Read the following three reviews of books that are really popular right now in Canada. If you had to choose one for Curious Kiwi to read on the plane, which one would you choose? Post the name of the book that you would chose on your blog. Below the title explain why you would choose that book.
C:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Catching Fire book cover image.jpg

Book 1: Catching Fire (The Hunger Games #2) by Suzanne Collins
Against all odds, Katniss has won the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. After all, she has returned to her family and her longtime friend, Gale. Yet nothing is the way Katniss wishes it to be. Gale holds her at an icy distance. Peeta has turned his back on her completely. And there are whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol - a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have helped create. Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she's afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her even more is that she's not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol's cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can't prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying.
Book 2: Matilda by Roald Dahl
C:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Matilda book cover.jpgMatilda is a sweet, exceptional young girl, but her parents think she's just a nuisance. She expects school to be different but there she has to face Miss Trunchbull, a kid-hating terror of a headmistress. When Matilda is attacked by the Trunchbull she suddenly discovers she has a remarkable power with which to fight back. It'll take a superhuman genius to give Miss Trunchbull what she deserves and Matilda may be just the one to do it!
So I have read all of the following book reviews that are most common in Canada. The one that I have chosen is book 2. The reason why I picked Matilda was not because everybody likes it. It is because Matilda has great knowledge and responsibility. At the end of the movie she faces Miss Trunchbull with her own power and defeats Miss Trunchbull. She was never to seen or been heard again.

Book 3: Diary of a Wimpy Kid – The Ugly Truth

C:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\DoaWK image.jpg
Greg Heffley has always been in a hurry to grow up. But is getting older really all it’s cracked up to be? Greg suddenly finds himself dealing with the pressures of boy-girl parties, increased responsibilities, and even the awkward changes that come with getting older—all without his best friend, Rowley, at his side. Can Greg make it through on his own? Or will he have to face the “ugly truth.”

Summer Learning Journey Day 3 Bonus Activity

Activity 2

Imagine that you have been asked to create your very own airline. What would you call it? Design a simple logo for your airline and post it on your blog. You must include a short explanation of your logo below the picture.

This is my very own airline logo I have designed myself. I used DesignMantic to create this.

Summer Learning Journey Day 3

Day 3 - Buying a ticket
Now that you have chosen your country it is time to start planning your trip. One of the first things you will need to do is to buy an airplane ticket. There are many, many airlines that fly around the world. Some of the most common are:
Air Canada Air New Zealand
C:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Air Canada logo.png                                C:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Air New Zealand image.png

Emirates             Air Asia
C:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Emirates logo.png                 C:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Air Asia logo.png
When you get onto the airplane you will be asked to watch a short safety video that tells you how to stay safe when flying in a plane. Arguably, the best aiplane safety videos are produced by Air New Zealand.
Activity 1
Watch both of the current Air New Zealand safety videos. The first is a video that stars the All Blacks. The second is a video that stars Rhys Darby and Anna Faris (Hollywood actress).  Links for the videos are found below:
Air New Zealand Men In Black’ video
Air New ZealandSafety in Hollywood’ video

Once you have finished watching the videos, go to your blog and list three things that you need to do to stay safe on an airplane.
The first thing you have to do when you are on a plane is to fasten your seat belt. It is important to do that because if you might get injuries during the flight and you might get a bump on your head.
Second thing is to stow your stuff such as laptops, ipads into their cases when not used.
Last but not least is to relax so you don't get panicky. Some people are not much of travellers but you will get used to it once you get on.

Summer Learning Journey Day 2

Day 2 – Learning the basics
Now that you have chosen your country, it is time to decide where, within your country, you would like to visit. Many tourists will choose to visit the capital city of a country. It is often quite large and full of interesting things to see and do.
Activity 1
Before you go overseas it will be important that you learn a bit about the capital city of your country. Hop online and find out about the capital city of your country. Use this information to complete the five sentences below:

  1. The name of the capital city is ____Berlin_______
  2. The population of the capital city is ____3.502 million____
  3. In January, the weather in the capital city is usually _______________________
  4. The capital city is located in the ______northeastern of Germany_______ (northern, southern, middle) part of the country.
  5. The languages most commonly spoken in the capital city are _________english__________

Activity 2
One of the most popular activities in Madrid, the capital city of Spain, is called ‘Bullfighting.’ It has been a part of Spanish culture for centuries. In bullfighting people called ‘toreros and ‘matadors’ fight with a live bull. The toreros do most of the fighting and, ultimately, capture the bull and tie it up. Once it has been caught, the matador joins the fight and kills the bull. Although most toreros and matadors are men, there are some women who also compete in the sport.
Not everyone supports bullfighting in Spain. In fact, about 30% of the population want it to be banned (stopped) completely. What do you think? On your blog tell us whether or not you think that bullfighting should be banned in Spain. Please provide, at least, two reasons to support your decision.
I think bullfighting should be forbidden because you never know when some kind of person will get hurt really badly and it's desperately dangerous.
In Spanish culture in bullfighting they play kill for fun. but you never know what the bull will do to you. The next minute you are broken apart.

Dear Peter and Jules (Waiau Family)

I am genuinely sorry for what you have been through. I desperately hope you are alright and safe with your family. I am also sorry for your granddaughters past and also her young brother.

I am extremely sorry for your house being destroyed by the devastating earthquake that has been hit in North Canterbury. I understand that Sophia is buried inside the same plot with her little brother.

I am a student from Pt England School, up north in Auckland. My name is Loseli and I am writing this letter to you for support of your family and your community.

Sincerely, Loseli

This is a letter of support to the people who have been hit in Kaikorua Wellington and other places that the earthquake has hit. This letter has been written to the Waiau family. Their house has been destroyed by the terrifying earthquake. I really hope they are okay and that God will be with them. God Bless Waiau Family.
